Third Grade Teacher
Wood Elementary

Welcome back to the new school year.  We have fun
in third grade ! This year will be an exciting one for all.

READING: Read the supplemental books for at least 10 minutes each night. Read each book twice as this will promote fluency. In February the minutes will be added to the 600 Minutes Club. The basal reader for 3rd grade will be used, as well as novels.  Skills will be taught such as decoding, sylliblication, prefixes,  and suffixes,  TAKS/TEKS skills will be covered during the year.  The Accelerated Reader program will be used at computer time once a week.

SPELLING: Spelling words come home every Monday.  Pretest over these words will be given on Wednesday. Final test on Friday. At the end of the six weeks, there will be a review and test of all the six weeks' words.

LANGUAGE: Daily oral language will be used every day with two sentences a day and a test over the sentences on Friday.  Parts of speech will be taught through Project Read,  a school wide program.  Compositions taught are:  How-To,  Compare/Contrast, and Narrative.  These will be developed over the year.

MATH: Math concepts will be taught from a  4th grade math book.  Concepts will include a review of addition and subtraction facts, multiplication/division facts, long division, 3-digit multiplication, fractions, decimals geometry, probability, problem solving.  TEKS skills for 3rd grade will also be reviewed for the TAKS test in April.  Mountain Math will be assigned on Monday and must be finished by Friday.  Word problems in the folders are also due weekly.

SOCIAL STUDIES: Concepts covered will be map skills, government, North American Indians, continents, states, and capitals. A research paper will be a part of the study.  Social Studies will be taught in a three week period every six week.

SCIENCE: Science TEKS and concepts are taught by other 3rd grade teachers.  The children rotate every three weeks.

ORGANIZATION: This a very important skill for third graders to learn. The children have a school planner that will help them to keep their assignments noted for tests and homework. Behavior is also noted.  Parents are to check the planner each night for homework and behavior and then sign or note any concern on the planner for the teacher.
