All students participating in physical education class at Corey are part of the Corey Running Club.  At various times throughout the school year, students jog during P.E. class time for 15 minutes to earn laps on their “Miler Card” (index card with their name on it).  Six laps equal one mile. As the laps are totaled, the students can earn the rewards listed below:

18 laps= 3 mile club - wristband
30 laps= 5 mile club - pencil
60 laps= 10 mile club - button
90 laps= 15 mile club - bumper stickers
120 laps= 20 mile club - zipper pull

Extra credit can be earned on the miler day card by participating in fun runs during the school year.  A note signed by a parent or guardian stating the name of the running event and the amount of miles run will earn the bonus laps on the card.

VERB
http://www.verbnow.com/?IDX=yellowball&

We all know that regular physical activity is essential for a lifetime of good health.  In an effort to inspire children to have fun establishing healthy activity habits, we will be participating in the VERB  Make-It-Up
program.  VERB is a campaign designed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Center for Disease Control and  Prevention (CDC) to increase and maintain physical activity among multicultural children ages 9-13.  VERB Make-It-Up is one in a series of VERB programs and initiatives designed to inspire kids to have fun getting and staying active.

The VERB Make-It-Up program is designed to supplement your children's core p.e. lessons.
To implement the program, we and your child need help from you.

Here's what you can do:
        *  Talk with your child about his/her current physical activities, suggest new
ones he/she might like, and try a new activity with them.
        *  Support your child's efforts by driving him/her to before-or-after-school events,
by organizing those events or by volunteering to be a coach.
        *  Make an effort to join your child in his/her physical activities.
        *  Create an activity that includes your child's favorite sports or
games and give it a try.  Let your child make up the rules.

We recognize the role regular physical activity plays in the health, welfare, and development of children.  Please join us in encouraging your child to have fun getting and staying active.

EVERY DAY IS GAME DAY SO GET OUT THERE AND GO PLAY!

Corey Elementary School
Physical Education Department

1. CLOTHING – Students need to wear comfortable clothing, suitable for active play.  Students should wear athletic shoes for support and comfort.  Sandals are not considered a safe shoe for participation.

2. PARTICIPATION – All students will be expected to participate in the physical education activities each day unless excused with a note from a parent or guardian.  The note should be dated and should specify the reason for the request.  After three days, it is a district policy that the student has a doctor’s recommendation to be excused from participation.  If your child has asthma or any other medical condition that may require special consideration, please let us know his/her limitations in regard to physical activity.  We will keep that information on file
and excuse the child according to the individual limitations, when necessary.

3. GRADING –Grading will be on mastery of the TEKS (Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Physical Education).
Any grade lower than an “S” (Satisfactory) will indicate a problem in one or more of these areas and parental support to correct the problem would be greatly appreciated.

4. TESTING – Each student in grades 3, 4, 5, and 6 will take the FITNESS GRAM physical fitness test.  The FITNESS GRAM is designed to evaluate and educate each student about the status of his or her physical fitness.  A fitness report card will go home with students in the month of May.  Award certificates will be given to those who meet all four standards of the test.  Please help us as we encourage your student to develop good fitness habits.

5. CONFERENCE TIME – Miss Livingston and Mrs. Barnes will be available for conferences from 8:30 AM - 9:10 AM each day.  Please call the main office,  862-867-3900, to setup an appointment.  Mrs. Barnes' email: cbarnes1@aisd.net       Miss Livingston's email:
