Birthdays
A few highlights for the coming week -
Spelling - Pretest on Monday and post-test on Friday
Language Arts - We are working on reading fluently and retelling stories with a beginning, middle and end.
Remember that your child should be reading on at least a 16 by this time of year. Some of the children can "read" the words, but they are not reading fluently with comprehension. Please also emphasize "reading with expression" when your child reads aloud to you. The minimum goal for the end of first-grade is a DRA level 16 at 60 words per minute. READ, READ, READ.
** Dolch Sight Words -- PLEASE make flashcards to enable your child to study at home. They call these their giraffe book words.***
Writing - We are working on writing sentences with a capital letter at the beginning, spaces between the words, and a period (stop sign) at the end.
We write in our journals almost every day. We always make a plan before we write to help us remember what we want to write about. This is different from an illustration which is completed at the end of a story.

Math - Measurement and telling time
****If you do not have math flashcards at home, please make it a priority to either purchase or make addition and subtraction flashcards. The children should be practicing their facts and getting faster and faster. The goal at the
end of first grade is to know addition and subtraction facts to 18.*****
Science/Social Studies - Natural resources
The children will bring a zipper bag home with their take-home reader. Please have your child read the book SEVERAL times to you or another person. We are working on fluency. The book should be easy for your child to read. After reading the book, please fill out the reading log, initial it, and return the bag, book and reading log to school. I will then send another book home with your child. READ, READ, READ.
General first grade info:
Math is an important part of our day each day. We discuss the calendar, patterns, counting, and much more. It is so easy to forget previously studied concepts when we are introducing something new. Please consistently count orally by 1's, 2's, 10's, 5's to 100; occasionally take out a piece of paper and have your child write to 100 without assistance.
Please remove all papers and notes from your child's notebook each evening. It is very important to sign or initial his/her ledger every night. I check it every morning, so it is a wonderful tool for communication.
The blue Wednesday folder will come home on Wednesday afternoon.
The Wednesday folder needs to be emptied, initialed, and returned on Thursday morning.
