Daily Procedures
Entering the classroom
  • Make sure you have your supplies and homework assignment. If you have a phone or electronic device, it should be turned off and left in your backpack.
  • Take your assigned seat. You are to be in your seat when the bell rings.
  • Begin working on the assignment on the board.
  • Copy the homework assignment.
Going to the restroom:
Note
: A pass to the restroom is NOT a pass to the vending machines!
  • Raise your hand, and when you have been acknowledged, politely ask to be excused to the restroom.
  • Take your Martin ID and the lanyard with the pink restroom pass with you. Be sure to replace the lanyard and pass when you return.

Going to the restroom during class should not be a habit; you should make every effort to get to the restroom during the passing period. You will be given two restroom passes per six week period; use them wisely.
Returning after an absence
  • Check the clipboard for the appropriate day's assignment
  • Complete the assignment and turn it in promptly.
  • If I do not receive the assignment within one week of your return, you will receive a zero for the assignment. If you have a quiz or test to make up, schedule a make up time IMMEDIATELY upon your return.
Heading your paper
  • Write your name, class and period, teacher's name, and date in the upper left hand corner.
  • On the top line, write the name of the assignment and page numbers.
Correcting your homework
  • Use your red pen for correcting.
  • Fill in any blanks with the correct response.
  • Mark a line through any incorrect answers and write the correct answer nearby.

Grading and Other Policies

Grading
:

Participation (10%): Every three weeks a grade will be recorded based on your participation in class. Your participation in class is essential to your success in the course. Participation encompasses a variety of activities in addition to the oral practice component. Students should be actively engaged in all classroom activities such as: drills, dialogues, book exercises, games, group work, homework correction, etc. Needless to say, a student’s participation grade is bound to suffer if s/he is off-task, has not completed the homework assignment, or has no idea what we’re doing when called upon.

Daily Grades. (25%): Daily grades include classwork, homework, bellringers or warm-ups, short quizzes, folder checks, and any other brief, graded assignments not falling under the other headings. Lab work grades are based on student performance and completion of assignments in the language lab. Since many of my assignments receive a completion grade, students should always at least attempt to do the work, even if they do not fully understand the material. Effort counts in my class.

Chapter Quizzes (25%): Chapter quizzes are given to gauge a student’s mastery of a chapter sub-section. Grades for special projects or assignments may also be weighted as would one of these quizzes. All quizzes are announced ahead of time; I do not give "pop" quizzes. At the end of each six week grading period your lowest chapter quiz grade is dropped.

Tests (40%): There will be a test upon the completion of each chapter in the textbook. You may have additional tests focused on individual competencies (reading, listening, speaking, writing, culture).

Make-up quizzes and tests: If you miss a quiz or a test, you must schedule with me to make it up within one week of your return to class. You may come by any day at lunch to do so.

Tutoring: If you're having trouble and feel that you need help, I am available for tutoring during lunch and before and after school. I ask only that you make an appointment with me so that I may adjust my schedule.

Policies you'll want to know...

  • Make-up work must be completed within one week of your return from an absence. Any work I have not received by the due date will be given a zero.
  • Homework should be neat and legible, and include the proper heading. You should use three-hole, loose-leaf paper, not paper torn from a spiral. You may do your homework in blue or black ink or in pencil ONLY.
  • Homework grades are on a scale of 0-10. Your homework does not have to be perfect to receive a 10 (or 100%). Rather, your homework must be complete, completely corrected, and correctly corrected!
  • Late work will only be accepted one day late, and at 50% credit.
  • Cheating will not be tolerated. I expect you to adhere to a code of academic integrity. Simply stated, this means that any work bearing your name should be the results of your efforts alone. If caught, both the "sharer" and "sharee" will receive zeros on the grade in question and citizenship grades will automatically be dropped to a C. Any conversation during a quiz or exam will be assumed to be an exchange of information relevant to that quiz or exam.
  • Leaving during class is permitted only for the restroom or if a pass is brought for you. There will be no trips to the vending machines after the bell rings.
  • A seating chart is established for the class and changes every six weeks. You are to sit ONLY in your assigned seat.
  • Food and drinks (other than water) in the French I class are not permitted once the bell has rung. This is a privilege reserved for upper level students.
