Gentle Reminders:

Language Arts  8:35 - 11:00
I hope you have been reading with your child EVERY night.  Reading is so very important---if you don't practice, you will never get better. I have told my class that it's just like practicing for football, soccer, piano, or cooking---we all have to practice.  We are working on "fluency."  Fluency is simply building reading speed.  Not only do I want the students to increase their reading speed, but along with that I want the students to know what they have read.  I DO NOT WANT THE STUDENTS TO JUST CALL WORDS IN ORDER TO READ FASTER!  I will be giving a fluency test each week.  This test is nothing for the students to study for but to read at home.  It becomes very clear who is reading and who is not reading at home.  We should see the fluency numbers going up each week.

Fluency Tips---
*Reading the same book or story more than once increases fluency.
*Reading books that are on or a bit below the child's independent reading level builds fluency.
*Reading aloud to your child while he/she follows along builds fluency.
*You read something and have your child read along with you (choral reading) builds fluency because they are listening to your speed and keeping up with you---of course don't choose something too hard or read too fast.
*Reading daily/nightly aloud builds fluency.

When your child reads to you, it is okay to stop and ask questions along the way.  Some sample questions might be:  Tell me the characters.  Who's the main character?  What's the setting?  What do you think will happen next?  Why do you think that character did that?
What's the problem in the story?

boy_read.gifHave fun reading!!!

Math   11:00 - 2:25

Practice your facts---don't count on a calculator!

Social Studies/Science   2:30 - 3:20
Social Studies/Science are really fun interactive classes.  We teach social studies for 3 weeks and science for 3 weeks.  The classes are interactive which means we do a lot of talking and discussing of topics.  Science is very hands-on.
