Language Arts:
My students will be writing every day at Beckham. We will be writing stories and letters and beginning to do research on a variety of topics. Your child will bring these pieces of writing home to share with your family. Please send them back to school with your child. They will be kept in a book box for your child to read often. I will also be writing every day in front of the class. I will be thinking out loud as I plan, write, revise, and proofread my writing so my students can see how writing and the writing process occurs.
My students will be reading every day at Beckham. They will be reading their published books in their book boxes to themselves and their classmates. Sharing with audience validates their purpose for writing. I will be reading several books a day out loud to my students. Just as in the writing process, I will be thinking out loud as I ask questions about what I am reading. Your child will begin to do the same when they are reading. I will also be meeting with a small group of students each day in a reading group. These small groups are made up of students with similiar reading needs and change throughout the year based on those needs. My students will be bringing home a book bag each day with 1-2 books at their independent reading level to read each night. While they
read to you, give them a chance to work through challenges by having them look at the picture for support and the beginning letter. Make sure their finger touches under each word as they read. This helps them visually stay focused. As they read, ask them about what they have read and what they think might happen next. This activates comprehension.
My students will practice spelling words each day at Beckham. Their individual spelling words are taken from their writing. They are working on letter knowledge, concept of word and phonemic awareness (how language works, sight words, and word families.
Math:
Each day in math, my students will be working on building number concepts, patterning, addition and subtraction. We will also be practicing writing and recognizing numbers. We will be solving problems and looking at the ways in which we go about solving these problems. My students will become more aware of the impact math has in their daily lives.
Science/Social Studies:
My students will be learning about different animals and living environments this year.
My students will work in the community of our classroom each day. We will all learn how important community is as we share and work together.
