Welcome to our class Web site!
The Web site will be a useful tool for you to stay informed about what is happening in our class. There are a few links to other Web sites that you may find useful and enjoy visiting. There is also a link for important Kindergarten dates as well.
Reading and Writing
Students will be writing every day. We will spend a good bit of time working on personal narratives. We will talk about stories that they have experienced. We will work on the beginning, middle, and end of a story as well as characters and setting. As I am modeling the writing process to students, I will be thinking out loud so that it will help them to learn and understand the writing process.
Students will read daily in class. Students will read their own published pieces. Please remember to return these to school after they have read them at home. As they read their published pieces at home, encourage them to point to the words as they read. This helps their eyes to track the words. If your child is challenged by a word, please let them try to work through it before telling them the words. This will help them become problem solvers as they read and not so dependent on help from others.
Math
The first few weeks of school, students will be introduced to and explore math manipulatives that we will use in class throughout the year. We will work on counting, more than, less than, equal, and concepts of numbers. Students will also work on number sets. (Making groups of 7 may be represented by a the number7, 7 objects, or the word, "seven.") We will also begin to sort and classify objects according to their attributes.
Science
Students will explore several different things in the science station. Throughout the year, they will learn about the scientific process and how to properly use science tools such as magnifying glasses, balances, and microscopes. Students will have the opportunity to learn from many nonfiction texts as well. In October we will be studying about spiders and bats.

September News
We have had a great first six weeks! We have been reading fairy tales and working with our names to help us learn letters and their sounds. Everyone has done a great job learning class routines and school expectations. In math we have been working on sorting and classifying. You can work on this at home by letting your child help sort out the laundry, sort the silverware, etc. We learne a lot about bears and what they like to eat and how they prepare to hibernate. We enjoyed a picnic in the room with our teddy bears.
Please remember to initial your child's folder daily.
