Math

Fractions

We just completed our study of analog clocks to the 5 minutes.  We learned about quarter after and quarter to the hour--this proves to be tough for some kiddos.  We also learned how to read a thermometer.

Next up-- a unit on geometry taking a look at plane shapes and space shapes.  We'll be learning about faces, edges and vertices.

Drill practice focus:  Subtraction of the basic facts. No fingers, no toes!!!  Kids are still struggling with their facts.  HELP!!!

LOOKING AHEAD.... Linear measurement.  Standard vs. non-standard units along with standard and metric.

I think spring fever is setting in and that worries me!  Fewer correct and returns are getting taken care of and more incomplete work creating zeros in the gradebook are popping up.  Please make sure and monitor your child's grades.  Remind them, it's THEIR responsibility to to get their work turned in on time and take care of correct and return papers.  ALL correct and return papers should be completed the night they are handed back to the student and turned in the NEXT day.

Don't forget to practice your facts!

Ask your student about part + part = whole OR
whole - part = part.
Students will learn what "show your work" means.
I need to see what they are thinking so I can address problems.  This will be required in all grade levels so we might as well get in the good habit now!

Do you know your "code" words?

Addition:  in all, altogether, sum, both, total,  addition, plus, join

Subtraction:  left, fewer, less, difference, more than (comparing), subtract, take away, remain

Practice and memorize those addition and subtraction facts!

Science

Weather is all around us and it's the perfect time to begin a unit on learning about weather.  We'll be learning about wind, precipitation, how to read a thermometer as well as learn about the water cycle.

The majority of the science lessons are not able to be made up due to the hands on nature of the activities.  Friday is science day so please avoid being out on Friday!  Plus, the kids LOVE science!

Conferences

If you are unable to make a scheduled conference, PLEASE let me know ASAP.  Our conference time is very limited.  If you can't come and we have notice, we can schedule someone else.
Thanks for being considerate!

Classroom Needs

marbles

Did you know a HUGE part of math is reading????  That's right.  The kids are expected to be able to independently read all their directions.  So have them read them to you.  Have them explain what they are to do.  One tiny little word like NOT can make all the difference in the world as to how to solve a problem.  How carefully does your child read?

Attendance

Please make every effort to have your child in school on a daily basis.  If they are running a fever--keep them home!  If they have the sniffles or just feeling like they don't want to get going that day--make them come anyway!  There is so much material that we cover each and every day that they can no way make up.  We need them here!

Call the office by 10:00 if your child is absent.  If not, expect a phone call from Mrs. Taylor checking on your child.
