READING WITH FIRST-GRADERS!!!! (tips to help)
***Please make sure that you are continuing to read with your child every day. It is so important that your child gets as much practice in reading as possible. When you are reading with your child at home, if they get stuck on a
word----REMEMBER---Do not just tell him/her the word. That does not teach your child strategies for reading. Remind your child of the strategies we are working on at school----
1. Think about what word would make sense. 2. Go back and reread the
sentence. 3. Use the picture to help you. 4. Look at how the word begins, get
your mouth ready to say the word and keep reading. 5. Skip the word and read the rest of the sentence, then see if you can figure out what word might make sense.
If he/she tries some of the strategies and still is having difficulty with the
word, then it is OK to just tell him/her the word. Always make them try a strategy or two before just giving the word!! I really do appreciate all you are doing to help your child learn to read. It really must be something we work on as a team at home and at school!
