Here's What's Happening:
Welcome to First Year Latin!
This will be the site for you to visit to see what we're doing in class.
8/25-8/29: On the first day of school, since all classes will meet only for 40 minutes or so, I'll just be issuring you information regarding this class with a brief introduction to me and my teaching philosophy. During this first week of school, you'll receive your Latin book, be introduced to the basics of the language,the notebook requirements for this first six weeks, and learn about the first declension. After this first week, I'll be listing assignments on a daily basis, rather than a weekly one.
8/28-29: You'll continue reviewing and learning about first declension. You'll also learn about the use of the nominative case. You'll complete a worksheet in class, and then we'll review the Lesson I vocabulary. You'll begin taking notes on a video about the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Homework: Vocab quiz on Lesson I
9/2-3: You'll take the vocabulary quiz. Then you'll receive information about verbs, and we'll disucss introductory information regarding them. We'll review first declension and the nominative case. Homework: Worksheet
9/4-5: You'll receive your graded quizzes of the first lesson. Next, you'll receive your textbooks and then the second vocabulary list - one concentrated on verbs. You'll learn more information regarding verbs. Then you'll repeat the vocabulary and discuss derivatives. Homework: Vocabulary quiz Chapter 2.
9/8-9: This class begins with the vocabulary quiz, then more information regarding the first conjugation. You'll continue with the video on Mt. Vesuvius. Then you'll receive your project assignment for this six weeks. Homework: Worksheet on verb practice.
9/10-11: We'll check your homework, and you'll receive your graded quizzes on the second vocabulary. After learning about the accusative and ablative cases, and taking notes on them if we didn't finish the video on Vesuvius' eruption, we will definitely do that today. I'll also issue you the project for this six weeks. Homework: Prepositions worksheet.
Open House is Monday, September 15
9/15-16: We'll have a review for the test we'll take, and we'll translate some sentences, conjugate verbs, and decline first declension nouns. I'll provide you with a check list for your review. Also - a reminder: don't forget to have your notebooks up to date. Homework: Test.
9/17-18: You'll begin by taking your test. Then, we'll examine your vocabulary for Lesson III. You'll take notes on 2nd declension masculine nouns. We'll also learn about adjectives and take notes on them as well. Homework: Vocabulary quiz Lesson III.
9/19-22: You'll take your vocabulary quiz first. Then, you'll receive your graded tests, which we will review. Next we'll review the information about 2nd declension nouns and adjectives. Homework: Worksheet
Your project on the influence of the Roman Empire will be due on September 22/23
9/23-24: After submitting your projects, and reviewing your worksheet, we will translate the story from Ch 2 in the book. You'll learn about and take notes on the 2nd conjugation. We'll review the vocabulary for Lesson IV. Homework: Vocab quiz IV
9/25-26: You'll take the vocab quiz. Then we'll read about the Cornelius family our stories in this book will describe, as well as information on Roman dress habits. We'll translate the story from Ch 3 (p11) and then begin the story of Ch 4. Homework: Finish translating the story on page 19.
9/29-30: We'll check your homework. We'll work some of the exercises in this chapter. I'll tell you yoour test format as we review for it. Homework: Test covering all vocab and grammar learned so far.
10/1-2: Begins with your test. Then you'll take notes on and learn about the 3rd conjugation, about complementary infinitives, and about the vocative case. You'll be taught the vocab highlighting 3rd conjugation verbs. Homework: Vocab quiz V

10/3-6: Begins with Vocab quiz V, and then review of your test. You'll learn about and take notes on possum, the compound of sum, as well as complementary infinitives. Homework: Exercise 5 d.
Halloween project will be due on Oct 20/21
10/7-8: We'll check your homework, and you'll receive your vocab quizzes. You'll receive and we'll discuss your project for this six weeks. Then,we'll read the story on p 33 in class, we'll read about the slave market on p 37, and review about adjective/noun agreement. Homework: 6c and 6d p. 35.
10/9-10: After reviewing your homework, we'll look at the similarities of 3rd declension accusatives with those of 1sy and 2nd. Then, you'll translate the story of "Bad News" in groups. Homework: Review I p. 49, 1a and 1c

10/14-15: After checking your homework, you'll learn about the format of the test for your next class: T or F on grammar, present tense of a 3rd conjugation verb, as well as possum , derivatives match, sentences. We'll review for the test. Homework: Study for Test!!! Also, review your notes.
10/16-17: Test. Then you'll receive Vocabulary VI, introducing 3rd-io and 4th conjugation verbs. You'll take notes over and learn about those verbs, giving examples of each in the present tense. We'll translate the storyon page 53, selecting conjugations of verbs from the story. Homework: vocabulary quiz. Also, your project!
10/20-21: First you'll submit your project for this six weeks. Then, you'll take your vocab quiz, after which we'll review of your test. You'll read about derivatives of English words in the Word Study, and also about the power of the father in the family from Patria Potestas. You'll take notes on asking simple Yes/No questions in Latin. We'll examine the vocab from the story of Ch 9. We'll begin translating in class - and you'll finish the story from Ch 9 for homework.
10/22-23: We'll check your translations. Then, we'll read about how the Romans indicated and measured time of day, quickly examine the major gods and goddesses, and then take notes over and learn about the imperative mood. Homework: Chapter 10 worksheet.
10/24-27: After checking your homework and reviewing about the imperative mood, we'll look at the vocabulary on page 71, and translate the story of Ch 10. Homework: Vocab quiz Ch 10 p. 71.
10/28-29: Begins with Vocab quiz Ch 10, and then, we'll read about the treatment of slaves (pp 75-77). To reinforce information regarding slaves, you'll watch and take notes over the history of the slave, Spartacus. After the video, you'll learn about and take notes on 3rd declension masculine and feminine nouns (p 81). We'll learn the vocab on p 82, omitting filia, filius, and liberi, and adding vox and arbor. Homework: Vocab quiz p. 82.
10/30-31:Vocab quiz p. 82. I'll return your Spartacus notes, which we'll review. Next, you'll learn about and take notes on the genitive case (see 80).Then, after looking at the vocabulary, we'll translate the story on Ch 11, page 79. Homework: Exercises 11c and 11d p. p 82.
11/3-4: We'll check your homework, and you'll receive your vocabulary quizzes. You'll take notes on the accusative case with subject of infinitives, and objective genitive. We'll look at the exercises regarding this, and then look at the directions for Ch 11 worksheet. Homework: Ch 11 Worksheet
11/5-6: After reviewing the worksheet, we'll examine the vocab on p 89 (Ch 12). Also, you'll take notes over uses of the ablative case (pp 90-91) for time when, time within which, manner, accompaniment, and means. (Whew!) Homework: Vocab quiz p. 89.

11/7-10: Begins with the vocab quiz. Then we'll translate exercises from Ch 12. We'll translate the story of this chapter on p. 89. Homework: Ch 12 worksheet.
11/11-12: We'll review your homework as well as completing additional review exercises in preparation for your test. I'll tell you the test format. Homework: Study for test covering through Ch 12.
11/13-14: Test. Then you'll watch and take 50 facts on the video concerning Roman roads. Homework: NONE!!! Enjoy your weekend...
11/17-18: We'll begin by reviewing your test and discussing the facts on Roman roads.
